What Is Microsoft Dataverse and How Does It Power Business Central?

Microsoft Dataverse — FAQ

What is Microsoft Dataverse?

Microsoft Dataverse (formerly Common Data Service) is a cloud-based data platform that provides a standardised, secure, and scalable way to store and manage data for Microsoft business applications — including Dynamics 365, Power Apps, Power Automate, and Business Central integrations.

What is the difference between Dataverse and Dynamics 365?

Dataverse is the data platform (the database layer) that stores data and provides APIs. Dynamics 365 is the suite of business applications (Sales, Business Central, Field Service, etc.) that use Dataverse as their data store. Power Platform also uses Dataverse.

Does Business Central require Dataverse?

No. Business Central operates independently of Dataverse. The Dataverse integration is optional and only needed when connecting BC to other Dynamics 365 applications (Sales, Customer Service, Field Service) or building Power Apps that span multiple Dynamics 365 products.

What is MS Dataverse used for?

Dataverse is used to unify customer data across Dynamics 365 Sales and Business Central, enable Power Apps without custom API connectors, build cross-Dynamics 365 Power BI reports, and trigger Power Automate workflows on ERP events — all without custom integration code.
